Our 5th annual Young Members Forum luncheon is just around the corner, and I hope you will join us on May 15, and bring some of the young professionals (YP) from your office.
This is one of our best events every year. As with past years, there will be a panel discussion with four professionals who will answer an array of career questions as well as questions from the audience. Even though it has been some time since I could define myself as a YP, I always find the panel discussions interesting, as it is good to hear from someone else about their career journey and what they have learned along the way. Registration is now open. You won’t want to miss it.
Additional news to share with you is that your Chapter launched a new website. Our current website is dated and does not serve the Board nor our membership well. For quite some time we have discussed the best way to make a change and we feel like we have finally settled on a solution. We also will be making changes regarding the newsletter, event registration, and the way we present information to you. It is definitely a work in progress, and we encourage you to check it out and provide us feedback on how to improve it. The new website address is www.acec-ca-sierrachapter.com.
As I noted in my initial column as Chapter president, I wanted to use this platform to keep you informed on important legislative updates that pertain to your firms. As many of you are aware, our Life/Trust benefits that many of our small firms take advantage of have been attacked by the State of California. Essentially, legislation was passed last year to prohibit ACEC from offering this benefit in order to force firms to use the State program, Covered California.
While this legislative change poses a major threat to our membership. I am pleased to report that through the tireless efforts of ACEC and our Director of Government Affairs, Tyler Munzing, ACEC has supported Assembly Bill 2434, sponsored by Assemblyman Tim Grayson. This bill would give ACEC a four-year extension to continue offering the benefits of the Life/Trust and improve the chances of passing a permanent solution at the end of four years.
As of April 14, the bill was passed on consent in committee which greatly improves the chances it will be approved by the full Assembly. This is yet another example of how ACEC is fighting for the well-being of our member firms every day.
